National Depression Awareness Week is soon to happen. This important week is usually held during the first week of May. However, people also celebrate it in tandem with National Mental Health Awareness Week, which occurs at the beginning of October. This week is an important topic that deserves recognition, as many people are suffering from depression for many reasons. Here are some points about this topic to keep in mind as this important week ascends upon us. If you need mental health treatment, contact our men’s addiction treatment center today at 866.457.7590.

Know The Signs Of Depression

During National Depression Awareness Week, those who struggle with depression or have friends or family members that deal with it will share information with others pertaining to the signs of a problem. If you know the symptoms of depression, you will likely know when to seek out treatment if you are suffering from a few of them yourself. Some signs of depression include:

  • Decreased interest in most activities almost every day
  • Increase or decrease in appetite which then leads to weight loss or gain
  • Loss of energy and lethargy
  • Inability to spend time concentrating for more than a few minutes at a time
  • Extended times of sadness every day of the week
  • Feelings of guilt or worthlessness
  • Suicidal ideation, planning, or attempted suicide

If you or someone you know is suffering from a combination of more than one of the above symptoms, it is best to seek out treatment immediately. Depression could occur on its own or be the result of another medical issue. Do not be afraid to speak out if you believe a friend or loved one is suffering from depression. Being there to provide information and the starting steps toward treatment is extremely important to those struggling with this condition.

Let Others Know About This Condition

During this week of the year, make sure to share any information you have available about this condition with others who may benefit from knowing about it. It is crucial to spread awareness to those who are unfamiliar with depression, so they obtain treatment for their issues as needed. Consider hosting a community event to spread the word to others. Hire a guest speaker to alert others about depression and the signs it is time to seek out treatment. During this week of the year, let others know about the risks associated with ignoring signs. It would be best if you also told them why treatment is so vital for those who struggle with this condition.
