The Red Oak Recovery® Approach

The Red Oak Recovery® approach begins with connecting young men with addiction treatment professionals to develop a treatment plan that will set them up for success in recovery.

The Red Oak Recovery® approach brings together evidence-based addiction treatment and adventure therapy in a clinician-run program at our center in the Blue Ridge Mountains. We provide individualized, gender-specific addiction treatment programs to young men ages 18 to 30. Our clinically dynamic care is designed to address their unique challenges while helping their families recover, grow, and make lasting lifestyle changes.

Promoting Long-Term Recovery

From day one, our treatment plan model prepares young men with the skills needed to succeed in sobriety and in life after treatment, including:

  • Good health and eating habits
  • The ability to identify and deal with life stressors in a positive way
  • Increased self-esteem
  • A greater sense of purpose
  • A strong support system
  • Better family relations

We know that recovery is a lifelong pursuit that continues long after leaving treatment. The Red Oak Recovery® approach begins with connecting young men with addiction treatment professionals to develop a treatment plan that will set them up for success in recovery.

Integrated Mental Health Treatment at Red Oak Recovery®

The young men’s rehab programs at Red Oak Recovery® are like no other. Our treatment plan focuses on clinical care, addressing substance use, trauma, and the underlying emotional issues that are often present. The program is centered on helping clients free themselves from the destructive thoughts, actions, and self-sabotage that stem from addiction, trauma, and mental health concerns.

Our master’s level clinicians hold dual credentials in both mental health and clinical addiction treatment. We work closely with clients to create personalized treatment plans that address substance use disorders and co-occurring mental health conditions with a focus and sensitivity to unresolved trauma. This integrated care helps address the root cause of substance misuse and mental health symptoms rather than just trying to change behaviors.

We help our clients learn to cope with the past and enhance the quality of daily life in the present and future. As a small program, we tailor the program to meet each client’s physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual needs.

Mental Health Conditions We Treat

For many young men, substance use is coupled with emotional and social issues. Problems dealing with anger and expressing it in a healthy way or struggling with low self-esteem often lead to alcohol or drug use to escape these feelings. We have specific programs to address co-occurring conditions like:

  • Anxiety
  • PTSD and other trauma disorders
  • Disordered eating
  • Depression
  • Anger
  • Obsessive-compulsive disorder
  • Bipolar disorder
  • Grief

Sometimes, these issues predate drug and alcohol use, and sometimes, it’s the other way around. We believe in addressing all issues in a simultaneous, holistic, and integrated fashion, regardless of which came first. This approach is essential for recovery as clients learn to identify the underlying issues that drive their substance use or mental health issues, recover from the shame surrounding their illness, and better relate to themselves and others.

Young Adult Addiction Treatment at Red Oak Recovery®

Our meticulously planned program is purposefully selective so we can individualize care for each client according to their situation, substance use, and mental health history. All of our therapy focusing on substance use and co-occurring disorders uses therapeutic processes, treatment modalities, and special groups to address the unique challenges of young men. These include:

  • Individual therapy
  • Support groups, including 12-step recovery meetings
  • Evidence-based therapies, like cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and dialectical behavior therapy (DBT)
  • Trauma-informed talk therapy, including eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR)
  • Experiential and adventure therapy, like equine therapy and activities in the Blue Ridge Mountains
  • Educational groups and workshops for nutritional education, boundary and goal-setting, and other life skills

We also help the family heal. Our unique family program teaches families to recognize what they need to do to stay centered and healthy and to support their loved one in recovery. Research has shown that when the family is involved in the recovery process, the prognosis is much better.

Our Flexible Length of Stay

Research shows that longer lengths of treatment correlate with improved outcomes in young adults. At Red Oak Recovery®, we offer our clients a flexible length of stay, averaging 70-90 days. During this extended time, our clients learn new ways of being in the world and practice those new positive coping skills in a safe and nurturing environment. This extended length of stay supports powerful transformations and opportunities for young adults to build their confidence and reclaim their lives.

While visiting Red Oak, clients engage in at least 30 hours of clinical contact, including two to three individual counseling sessions per week. Engaging with our clinicians builds trust and fosters healthy relationships, leading to quality outcomes for our clients.
