What Is Mental Health Awareness Week?

Mental Health Awareness Week is a time when reflection about different mental issues is explored. It gives people a chance to understand the signs and symptoms of the many conditions, as well as provide options for treatment if they or someone they know has a mental health difficulty to deal with. This year, Mental Health Awareness Week is held at the beginning of October. Here are some points about this important issue to keep in mind as this celebration takes place. For more information about our men’s mental health treatment programs, contact Red Oak Recovery® today at 866.457.7590.

Some Difficulties That Trigger Mental Health Problems

Mental health issues are usually experienced in tandem with another difficulty. Knowing which conditions can cause mental health problems will help you to seek treatment as needed. Some of these conditions include:

  • Anxiety
  • Eating Disorders
  • Bipolar Disorder
  • Depression
  • Psychosis
  • PTSD
  • Addiction/Substance Use Disorder

If you suffer from one of the above problems, you may also be dealing with a mental health issue. Being aware of this helps to obtain treatment for both issues.

Take A Test To Determine Your Current Status

The best way to tell if you have a mental health problem is to take a test to determine whether you are displaying signs of this condition. There are several online sources available to do this on your own, at your leisure. Be aware, however, that even if you show signs of a problem, this does not mean you are indeed dealing with a mental health issue. This is just a first step to give you a starting place for discussion with a physician should you happen to have a positive result. During this week of the year, many take tests to check on their overall well-being.

Share Information With Others

Mental health awareness lets others know about mental issues so they can help people they know that suffer from them. This time of year, spread your knowledge about mental health issues to those you believe would benefit from information about these conditions. Consider speaking at a community event, hand out flyers with signs and symptoms of these issues so people realize what they entail, or host a get-together where professionals and clients can teach others about these issues.

Know Where To Go If You Do Have An Issue

It is hard to battle a mental health problem on your own. In many instances, you may not even know you have an issue until a test shows you should speak to someone about the symptoms you are experiencing. If you do have mental health problems, it is best to seek treatment from a professional.
