By learning how to spot the early signs of bulimia, families can prevent an eating disorder from spiraling out of control. While each person experiences eating disorders in slightly different ways, there are a few common signs of bulimia to watch out for. Once someone discovers that they have an eating disorder, they can get help for it in the right bulimia treatment program in North Carolina.

The Signs of Bulimia

This condition is extremely common in young adults. When looking for the signs of bulimia in young adults, loved ones have to be extremely attentive. Many people with bulimia try to hide the fact that they have a problem because they are afraid someone will force them to get help. They may also be afraid that family members will make them start eating normally if they tell anyone.

Often, loved ones can notice symptoms like social isolation, depression, or anxiety. The individual may seem like they have a preoccupation about their weight or body shape. They may also have a distorted self-image.

When someone has bulimia, they go through cycles of binging and purging. This is one of the most obvious signs of bulimia. When someone is going through a binge episode, they will eat a large amount of food in private. They may get fast food from multiple restaurants and eat all of the food in their car. Once someone starts a binge episode, they may feel like it is impossible to control their eating.

After they binge eat, the individual may feel shame or self-disgust. Then, they may try to purge their body of the added calories by taking laxatives, vomiting, exercising excessively, or starving themselves. As the disorder progresses, they may feel like they have to purge after just a small meal or snack.

The Physical Signs of Bulimia

While some of the early signs of bulimia involve the individual’s actions, there are also physical signs to watch out for. Loved ones may notice symptoms like dry skin, fatigue, and fainting. The individual may have damaged teeth, dehydration, bowel issues, or an irregular heartbeat. They may also go to the bathroom frequently during meals or right after eating.

Getting Help for Bulimia and Mental Health Disorders

Once someone notices the signs of bulimia, the next step is getting help. Through a bulimia treatment center in North Carolina, clients can learn more about the signs of bulimia in young adults and get help. Often, people with bulimia also develop co-occurring disorders like substance use or depression. Because of this, the best treatment centers will offer support for a variety of different disorders.
