A mood disorder is a kind of mental condition that affects the mood and how the mood functions. This term is fairly broad and actually includes a number of different types of mood disorders. If you have moods that frequently change, it’s time to seek out young adult rehab programs for the help you need.

Various Types of Mood Disorders

The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-V) includes depressive disorders and bipolar disorders as mood disorders. Within these two classifications, there are even more types of mood disorders. The most common types of mood disorders include:

  • Major depressive disorder
  • Bipolar I and II disorders
  • Seasonal affective disorder
  • Disruptive mood dysregulation disorder
  • Premenstrual dysphoric disorder
  • Persistent depressive disorder

Major depressive disorder involves having long periods of hopelessness, fatigue, and sadness. Meanwhile, a seasonal affective disorder is essentially a depression that normally strikes during the shortest days of the year. A persistent depressive disorder is a type of depression that last for more than two years.

Bipolar I disorder is what most people think of as manic depression. The individual goes through periods of intense energy, euphoria and irritable moods. Bipolar II disorder is another one of the common types of mood disorders. This kind of bipolar depressive involves having hypomania and depression without any history of manic episodes.

How Do Mood Disorders Connect to Addictions?

These types of mood disorders are quite common in people who have an addiction. Sometimes, people use illicit drugs to self-medicate. They may drink alcohol or take drugs to boost their depression temporarily. Since these chemicals only make depression worse, they end up using over and over again to chase the same elusive high.

In other cases, the mental disorder is a result of the addiction. Drugs and alcohol can cause symptoms of depression, bipolar disorder, and other conditions. No matter which problem came first, individuals need to treat the addiction and the mental disorder if they want to become sober.

Getting Help for Co-Occurring Illnesses

Often, different illnesses feed off of each other. A mental disorder and an addiction can worsen the symptoms of each other. Because of this, the top mental health treatment North Carolina has to offer includes dual diagnosis treatment. In this kind of treatment center, individuals get help for the addiction and the underlying mental disorder during the same rehab program.

At a treatment facility, individuals can find program options such as:

  • Eco-therapy
  • Family counseling
  • Wilderness therapy
  • Individual therapy
  • Adventure therapy
  • Experiential therapy

Overcoming an addiction is possible. Red Oak Recovery can help you treat mood disorders, addictions, and co-occurring illnesses. Begin your recovery journey today by calling us at 866-457-7590.
