Young adults are a jumble of emotions on a good day. Accordingly, their minds and bodies are still going through changes, hormonal and otherwise, almost constantly. But when you add stress to the mix, your grown child may feel overwhelmed. Consequently, explosive anger, self-isolation, and the silent treatment are all indicators that your loved one may be experiencing signs of stress. If they need help, Red Oak Recovery offers a family program where they can breathe deeply while learning helpful coping skills for handling life’s more difficult moments.

If you recognize the signs of stress in your life, it may be time to reach out for help. Contact our men’s mental health treatment program today at 866.457.7590 to learn more.

Common Causes of Stress in Young Adults

Many factors may cause your grown child to feel signs of stress. For instance:

  • College politics
  • Grades
  • Problems at work
  • Relationships
  • Issues at home
  • Co-occurring disorders

If your loved one has developed a drug or alcohol abuse problem, this will also be a point of contention. Unfortunately, today’s young people deal with problems that we, as parents, never had to imagine. Generally speaking, they include being bullied or embarrassed online, dating at a young age, the pressure to have sex at a young age, and being witness to a nation in turmoil. Any one of these could cause a seasoned adult to feel tense.

How To Identify Symptoms of Stress in Young Adults

Stress in young adults may look different than it does in older adults, and odds are good your loved one isn’t going to talk about it. As a parent, look for these signs of stress if you think something is going on with your older child:

  • Frequent headaches or stomachaches
  • Unexplained irritability
  • Sleep disruption
  • Constant worry
  • Negative self-talk

Young adults often have trouble talking about their feelings and emotions, especially to Mom and Dad. Consequently, if you notice signs of stress, sit down with them, and discuss ways to help them feel better.

How to Help Your Loved One Handle Stress

One of the best ways to help people handle stress is to handle stress well yourself. Be a role model during tough times and let them see what stress management looks like. For example, healthy options include:

  • Talking to someone about your stress
  • Getting enough sleep every night
  • Upping your nutrition
  • Getting plenty of exercise
  • Spending time doing activities you enjoy
  • Don’t start using substances

If your loved one sees you coping well with stress, they’ll learn from you. Still, everyone needs help sometimes. If your loved one is struggling under high levels of anxiety, it’s okay to encourage them to reach out for help. At Red Oak Recovery, we specialize in helping young adults, ages 18 to 30, overcome the obstacles in their lives. Whether a substance use disorder or overwhelming feelings of anxiety or depression, our care team can help.
