One out of five American adults experiences mental illnesses each year. An estimated two out of three people or more will have a mental illness at some point in their lifetime. Unfortunately, many people do not get help because of the stigma and stereotypes around mental health disorders. During Mental Health Awareness Month, individuals everywhere have a chance to raise awareness and end the stigmas. For more information about celebrating this month, please contact Red Oak Recovery‘s men’s addiction treatment program today at 866.457.7590.

Celebrating Mental Health Awareness Month

Mental Health Awareness Month occurs each year during the month of May. Advocates have celebrated during this month since 1949. Over the years, Mental Health Awareness Month has gradually increased in size as more and more people learn about mental disorders and how to spot common signs or symptoms.

The Mental Health America group originally started Mental Health Awareness Month. Today, Mental Health American still runs many of the month’s top programs and activities. Each year, the awareness event focuses on a different theme. In 2018, the theme was about physical fitness and overall health.

During Mental Health Awareness Month 2019, the group expanded on the same ideas by talking about recreation and work-life balance. They looked at ways that social connections improve overall wellness and mental health. In addition, the awareness event covered topics like spirituality, support animals, humor, and animal companionship.

2021’s celebration is particularly relevant. The theme this year is “You Are Not Alone.” After a year of social isolation, it’s important to remember that you don’t have to manage your mental health condition alone. There is support and treatment available. If you’re struggling with a mental health condition, please reach out for treatment today.

What Happens During the Awareness Month?

Many different organizations offer events, so outreach activities can vary. Each organization uses a toolkit of materials from Mental Health America to plan events. Many of the events include mental health screenings to help people spot common signs of mental illnesses.

An estimated 18% of Americans suffer from schizophrenia, depression, or bipolar disorder. Many event organizers focus on statistics like this one to raise awareness. Other awareness topics include information about suicide prevention and strategies for mental wellness.

Ultimately, one of the biggest goals is to reduce the stigma around mental disorders. Throughout Mental Health Awareness Month 2019, organizations like the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Service Administration will offer events. May is also the month for events like the National Children’s Mental Health Awareness Day.

Finding Help for a Mental Illness
