While people treat a panic attack vs anxiety attack like they are the same thing, there are actually differences between these terms. These attacks last for different lengths of time and have different levels of intensity. A panic attack is typically more random and intense than an anxiety attack. Meanwhile, anxiety attacks typically happen because of a trigger.

A Panic Attack Vs Anxiety Attack

Panic attacks can happen because of workplace stress and other factors, but they can also be completely unexpected. An expected panic attack or an anxiety attack can happen because of memories of past trauma, withdrawal from drugs, driving, stress at work, chronic illnesses, medications, or certain phobias. Both types of attacks can have symptoms like chest pain, but there are variations in the symptoms and attack causes.

The Symptoms of a Panic Attack

One way to understand a panic attack vs anxiety attack is by looking at the symptoms. A panic attack can cause a racing heartbeat, dizziness, numbness, nausea, and shaking. The individual may experience a shortness of breath, sweating, hot flashes, chills, or stomach pain. It may even feel like something is choking or smothering them.

Experiencing a panic attack can make someone feel like they are losing control or going crazy. The individual may feel a sense of detachment or a sudden fear of death. While panic attack symptoms tend to peak at around 10 minutes, multiple attacks can occur in a row.

The Symptoms of an Anxiety Attack

With an anxiety attack, the symptoms typically start after a time period full of extra worrying. Over the first few minutes or hours, the symptoms may increase. While anxiety attack symptoms are less intense than a panic attack, they can still be extremely unpleasant.

Some of the more common anxiety attack symptoms include irritability, chest pain, dry mouth, and dizziness. The individual may experience concentration issues, fatigue, muscle pain, restlessness, and a rapid heart rate. An anxiety attack may make someone suffer from shortness of breath, distress, or sleep disturbances. Unlike a panic attack, these symptoms can last for days or months.

Discovering Dual Diagnosis Treatment

Other than learning the difference between a panic attack vs anxiety attack, individuals should also look for treatment programs to alleviate their condition. Since many people have mental disorders and addiction at once, finding a dual diagnosis program is important. Through this kind of program, individuals can enjoy getting the right treatment for their co-occurring conditions.

At a mental health and anxiety treatment program, clients will discover options such as:

  • Psychotherapy
  • Trauma treatment
  • Depression, anxiety and eating disorder treatment
  • Dual diagnosis treatment
  • 12-step programming
  • Holistic healing, gardening, and eco-therapy
  • Family counseling and individual therapy

Mental illnesses and substance use disorders do not have to take over your life. Once you find out if you are having a panic attack vs anxiety attack, the next step is to treat it. With the help of Red Oak Recovery, you can overcome any obstacles and begin living a happier lifestyle. Find out more about our range of programs by calling us at 866.457.7590 today.
