Meet The Editorial Team

Rational emotive behavioral therapy (REBT) is a type of cognitive-behavioral therapy. This type of talk therapy is not new but has been used readily since the 1950s to help people better understand their irrational beliefs. What is REBT able to do for your situation? For many, REBT for addiction recovery can help stop the negative thought patterns you have that often lead to drug or alcohol consumption. At Red Oak Recovery, we may offer REBT to you. Contact our team today at 866.457.7590 for more information about your treatment options.

How Does REBT Work?

REBT for addiction therapy can help a person pinpoint negative thought patterns that lead to behavioral or emotional problems. Once a person identifies what those behaviors are, they then learn how to change, replace, and improve them with a more rational expression. Several principles make up the use of REBT. These are sometimes called the ABCs of REBT. The principles include:

  • Activating event or situation that in some way triggers a negative response from a person. For example, a negative comment made by someone else triggers something.
  • Beliefs or irrational thoughts occur as a result of that adverse event or situation. In this case, that may lead to ideas that something is wrong with you.
  • Consequences are the emotions that follow the irrational thoughts. In this case, that may include self-hate or anxiety.

When a person is working through REBT, they will identify what is happening to them in these moments. Then, instead of using drugs or alcohol, they may engage in reframing those thoughts. For example, they may brush off the negative comment or confront someone about it without taking it as a personal assault.

How REBT for Addiction Recovery Changes Things

How can reframing your thoughts lead to reduced mental health disorder symptoms or avoidance of drug and alcohol addiction? We can do that by teaching a person key techniques. This includes problem-solving, such as learning how to improve social skills, decision-making skills, and conflict resolution skills to gather accurate information.

It may also include cognitive restructuring techniques that use guided imagery, looking at situations in a new way, and disrupting the negative thoughts. Coping strategies are also used, such as hypnosis, relaxation, and meditation.

Through a combination of these types of therapies, a person will become more confident in their ability to change thoughts into better actions. For many people, REBT empowers them and gives them a better level of control over what is happening around them, leading to better decision-making.

What Is REBT Able to Change for You?

To find out how REBT can help you, schedule a consultation with our Red Oak Recovery team. After a consultation and assessment, our experienced counselors will create a treatment plan that fits your needs. It is likely to include numerous types of therapy, including cognitive-behavioral therapy and REBT. Through a combination of both these evidence-based therapies and holistic therapies, you may find yourself better in control of your actions. That means an opportunity for you to stop using drugs or alcohol to control your emotions and thought patterns. Some of the treatment programs that may help you include:

  • Women’s rehab programs
  • Family therapy programs
  • Holistic healing tools
  • Dual diagnosis treatment

Finding the Right Therapy for You

What is REBT able to do for you? Could REBT for addiction recovery give you the chance to heal? You don’t have to make decisions yet regarding REBT or any other treatment option that may fit your needs. Yet, you do have to call for help. Our team is available at Red Oak Recovery when you call us at 866.457.7590 or connect with us online.
