If you are a young adult, you undoubtedly use a cell phone or laptop regularly. In recent years, social media usage has skyrocketed. In fact, in 2019, 79% of adults used social media, up from a mere 5% in 2005. With so many people logging into social media accounts, there are some risks. Excessive young adult social media use has repercussions, including the possibility of addiction. Read on to learn the dangers of social media use, the signs of addiction to social media, and what to do if you’re struggling with addictive behavior.

The Dangers Of Young Adult Social Media Use

When young adult social media use is excessive, specific dangers arise. Many people turn to social media to keep in contact with friends. There is also, however, the chance of them corresponding with less desirable people. However, you need to be alert about oversharing too much about your life online, which leads to strangers getting a hold of personal information. In addition, these dangers are present with social media use:

  • The use of potentially damaging photographs. When you post pictures of yourself partying or engaging in activities that are not socially acceptable, future employers or schools may use these as a reason for rejection.
  • Humiliating or public shaming comes into play. If you post information where others see it, there is a risk of unfavorable responses that is publicly exposed.
  • Addiction is a genuine possibility. When you turn toward social media often, you may use it as an outlet for expression instead of talking to family members and peers follows.

Signs Of An Addiction Due To Young Adult Social Media Use

When young adult social media use occurs daily, the possibility of addiction always looms. It is essential to be aware of addictive behavior so that you can seek treatment promptly. Some signs of social media addiction include:

  • Anger, anxiety, or depression when there is no access to cell phone service or a device to check on social media platforms
  • Reaching for a device to check on social media platforms the first thing in the morning, the last thing at night, and many times in between
  • Talking about people on social media as if they are friends
  • Becoming elated when you get favorable responses to a posting
  • Posting risky information in an attempt to boost reactions from others
  • Sharing too much information about oneself
