a young woman learning to answer the question "what is emdr?"A lot of treatment options are available when it comes to addiction. To adequately treat the disease, however, people have to deal with underlying issues. In many cases, these problems led to addiction in the first place. One way that rehab centers deal with them is with EMDR, but what is EMDR?

What Is EMDR?

EMDR stands for eye movement desensitization and reprocessing. Regarding psychotherapy, it’s relatively new to the field. Experts describe it as a type of nontraditional therapy that helps people process traumatic events without directly talking about them.

How Does EMDR Work?

EMDR helps the brain reprocess adverse events. When people first hear about it, they’re often skeptical. After all, it’s hard to believe that eye movement can help people process traumatic events more efficiently.

While science isn’t sure why EMDR works, people should know that it focuses on rhythmic eye movements. When thinking about traumatic events, eye movements lessen the impact of negatively charged memories.

How Does EMDR Differ From Other Therapies?

The main difference between EMDR and other types of trauma therapy is the interaction between the therapist and client. For talk therapy to work, people have to discuss the trauma in considerable detail with their therapists. The goal is to help people apply logic to resolve their problems.

With EMDR, however, they don’t have to bring up the traumatic incidents if they don’t want to. Instead, they just have to think about the events during the sessions. The movement of their eyes helps them reprocess the events and their emotions.

What Are the Benefits of EMDR?

EMDR is an excellent choice for people who have trouble talking about their traumatic experiences. It also shows results much quicker than traditional talk therapy. Most people see results after only a couple of sessions. With talk therapy, it can take months or years to produce meaningful results.

Also, EMDR works on more than just memories. People can also use it to process present disturbances and future actions. If there’s a problem in which traumatic events or negative ways of thinking hinder a person, EMDR can help.
