Substance Use Statistics [Infographic]

Substance use has quickly become an epidemic in our society. While many who suffer from substance use remain in denial about their problem, the numbers aren’t deniable. With such large numbers found in substance use statistics, there can be no denial about the severity of this problem.

General Statistics

The National Survey on Drug Use and Health estimates that during 2014, almost 22 million Americans over the age of 12 suffered from substance use. Of those millions, one out of every eight suffered from both drug and alcohol use at once. Also, 8 million of those with a substance use problem also suffered from an untreated mental illness.

Substance Use Statistics by Drug

Many different substances can lead individuals to substance use. The most often found culprits are the following:

Prescription Drugs

Pain relievers are the most common reason for use within prescriptions. In fact, about 2 million fell victim to opioid pain reliever use. Along with pain relievers, sedatives, tranquilizers, and stimulants are other popular drugs used.

During 2015, about half a million individuals found themselves suffering from heroin use. Of those suffering, about a quarter become addicted to the substance. Also, those who already have an addiction to alcohol are two times more likely to develop an addiction to heroin.

Of all the substances, alcohol is the most used within the United States. Almost 17 million individuals found themselves suffering from alcohol addiction and use in 2013. Overall, half of all Americans have a history of alcohol use in their family.
