Substance abuse has quickly become an epidemic in our society. While many who suffer from substance abuse remain in denial about their problem, the numbers aren’t deniable. With such large numbers found in substance abuse statistics, there can be no denial about the severity of this problem.
The National Survey on Drug Use and Health estimates that during 2014, almost 22 million Americans over the age of 12 suffered from substance abuse. Of those millions, one out of every eight suffered from both drug and alcohol abuse at once. Also, 8 million of those with a substance abuse problem also suffered from an untreated mental illness.

Pain relievers are the most common reason for abuse within prescriptions. In fact, about 2 million fell victim to opioid pain reliever abuse. Along with pain relievers, sedatives, tranquilizers, and stimulants are other popular drugs used.
During 2015, about half a million individuals found themselves suffering from heroin abuse. Of those suffering, about a quarter become addicted to the substance. Also, those who already have an addiction to alcohol are two times more likely to develop an addiction to heroin.
Of all the substances, alcohol is the most abused within the United States. Almost 17 million individuals found themselves suffering from alcohol addiction and abuse in 2013. Overall, half of all Americans have a history of alcohol abuse in their family.
