Peer pressure and underage drinking are extremely common problems, but they can also be extremely dangerous. Someone who starts drinking at a young age is more likely to suffer from alcoholism or drug abuse later in life. In addition, drinking can increase the chances that a teenager is the victim of a violent crime or an alcohol-related accident. To get the help they need before it’s too late, they need an adolescent treatment center NC provides.

The Problem of Peer Pressure and Underage Drinking

Unfortunately, peer pressure and underage drinking often occur among teenagers and young adults. They may see their friends drinking and feel like it is not a problem. Sometimes, the teenager just does not want to feel left out at a party or social event. They start drinking because their friends are doing it, but they can quickly develop an addiction.

Some teenagers try drinking as a part of growing up. Other teenagers end up developing a major problem that lasts for a lifetime. Peer pressure and underage drinking can increase the chances that a teenager ends up trying alcohol or other drugs. Anyone can develop an addiction, so there is no way to know what will happen before the teenager gives in to peer pressure.

Why Do Teenagers Drink?

While peer pressure and underage drinking have a cause and effect relationship, other factors make someone more likely to drink or develop alcoholism. Some people want their classmates to accept them. Other teenagers drink to achieve peer approval.

If someone has a history of substance use in their family, they are more likely to develop an addiction. Addictions seem to have a genetic component, so a teenager is more likely to suffer from substance use if a parent, sibling or relative has an addiction. In addition, seeing family members drink excessively can normalize drinking and substance use.

Parents can help by paying attention to their child’s behavior and talking to them about alcohol. If a teenager suddenly becomes secretive, they may be trying to hide a substance use problem. Suddenly changing friends or having problems at school are also signs of a potential issue. Once parents realize that there is an issue, an adolescent substance use treatment center can help with the next step.

Learning More About Treatment Options

Even when someone knows that they need help, finding a treatment program is not always easy. Clients need an individualized program that works for their unique needs. From hybrid wilderness programs to nutritional support, there are a number of different addiction treatment programs available. Some of the top treatment centers offer support with options such as:

  • Psychiatric and physical evaluations
  • Eco-therapy and gardening
  • Clinical and nutritional assessments
  • Adventure and wilderness programs
  • Dual diagnosis care
  • Gender-specific treatment
  • Trauma-informed programs

No matter how long you have suffered from substance use, you are not resigned to live with your addiction forever. Through the right treatment, you can begin your sobriety right away and enjoy a healthier lifestyle.
