Common Psychiatric Disorders

There are many different types of psychiatric disorders, and each comes with its own challenges. Common psychiatric disorders can make it difficult for people to function in their everyday lives. They may have trouble keeping a job, maintaining relationships, and caring for themselves.

Here are five of the most common disorders that people experience:

1. Anxiety Disorders

People with anxiety disorders often feel very anxious or scared. This can make it hard for them to do things that other people take for granted, such as going to work or school. Types of anxiety disorders include generalized anxiety disorder, social anxiety disorder, and panic disorder.

2. Depressive Disorders

Depressive disorders are persistent feelings of sadness, emptiness, or hopelessness. People with depression may also have trouble sleeping, eating, or concentrating. Several types of depressive disorders exist, including major depressive disorder and persistent depressive disorder.

3. Eating Disorders

Eating disorders are characterized by abnormal eating habits that can lead to serious health problems. Individuals with eating disorders may try to lose weight by starving themselves, vomiting, or using laxatives. Several different eating disorders include anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge eating disorder.

4. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a mental health condition that can develop after exposure to a traumatic event, such as a natural disaster, a car accident, or military combat. PTSD can cause severe symptoms, including flashbacks, nightmares, and anxiety.

5. Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a condition that causes people to have intrusive and unwanted thoughts (obsessions) and to feel the need to do certain things over and over again (compulsions). Individuals with OCD may wash their hands excessively, check things repeatedly, or hoard objects, causing them to feel often unable to control their thoughts or behaviors.

Knowing some common psychiatric disorders is the first step in understanding how to get help. Psychiatric disorders treatment at Red Oak Recovery® can give you the tools you need to manage your symptoms and live a happy, healthy life.
