Bipolar is one of several mood disorders that affect people across the country every day. Unfortunately, mental health and mood disorders are rarely discussed among men. Stigmas, fear of failure, and a lack of education keep many men from mental health treatment. The truth is, bipolar disorder is common among men. A reputable treatment program is the best way to understand and address bipolar disorder.

If you or a young man in your life is struggling with bipolar disorder, Red Oak Recovery® can help. Our holistic male bipolar disorder treatment programs cater to young men ages 18-30. Call us now at 866.457.7590 to learn more about our bipolar disorder treatment program in Asheville, North Carolina.

What Is Bipolar Disorder?

Bipolar disorder is a mood disorder that affects someone’s mood, behavior, and thought patterns. Characterized by depressive and manic states, men living with bipolar disorder experience times of high energy followed by periods of depression. Often, it can feel like these shifts happen suddenly. It can feel impossible for those living with bipolar disorder to control or change their mood and behavior.

There are three types of bipolar disorder:

  • Bipolar 1: People experience bouts of mania or high energy, followed by depression.
  • Bipolar 2: People experience at least one major depressive and manic episode annually.
  • Cyclothymic disorder: A mild form of bipolar disorder characterized by mood swings and less severe symptoms than the other types of bipolar disorder.

Bipolar disorder can make people feel out of control. They might feel like life’s events are overwhelming one moment and feel like they are fully in charge the next. This oscillation between mania and depression can be hard to communicate with loved ones and difficult for others to understand. A bipolar treatment program can help those struggling understand the cyclical nature of bipolar disorder and diagnose any underlying co-occurring disorders that might contribute to bipolar disorder.

How Common Is Bipolar Disorder in Men?

Men experience bipolar disorder and other mood disorders as often as women. Unfortunately, men rarely discuss mental health with their loved ones or other men. This can make bipolar disorder even more isolating for men in need of treatment and support. A bipolar disorder treatment program specifically for men can help undo harmful stigmas and social expectations for mental health. It can also help men understand that their life experiences and struggles are different from other men. Healing alongside other men can have a tremendous impact on the mental health and emotional resilience of men living with bipolar disorder.
