The 12-Step System

The 12 steps were originally developed by Alcoholics Anonymous as a way to help individuals struggling with alcohol addiction. However, the principles and practices of the 12 steps are valuable to anyone in recovery, whether you’re currently enrolled in AA/NA meetings or not.

At Red Oak, we believe that the 12-step system can be an integral part of the recovery process for young men. It provides structure, guidance, and a sense of community for those who are navigating their journey toward sobriety.

Our 12-Step Recovery Program Is Personal

We use the 12 steps as a structure for recovery, and we realize that for recovery to be a life-long commitment to mindful living, the approach must be fluid, open, and totally nonjudgmental. Our clients are invited to take those aspects of 12-step recovery that resonate with them and leave the rest. Red Oak Recovery® is an environment where personal boundaries are not infringed upon and where genuine trust can be built so that the process of recovery and transformation is rooted in each individual’s personal path.

When you or a loved one enters our program, we will work with you to create a personalized treatment plan that may incorporate the 12 steps. Treatment plans will be meaningful and relevant to each client’s unique journey. Our goal is to support young men in finding what works best for them and to provide ongoing guidance and resources throughout the recovery process.

Young Men Find Connection in 12-Step Recovery

12-step meetings are available within our own space to familiarize our clients with the teachings of the steps and the structure of the meetings. Clients may also travel in small groups to off-campus meetings during their stay at Red Oak Recovery®. Our leadership team, clinical technicians, therapists, and team members strive to uphold and reinforce core principles of the 12-step recovery program in their day-to-day actions and interactions with others, modeling for our clients the essence of an authentic life based on:

  1. Honesty
  2. Hope
  3. Surrender
  4. Courage
  5. Integrity
  6. Willingness
  7. Humility
  8. Brotherly/Sisterly Love
  9. Discipline/Self-inquiry
  10. Perseverance
  11. Awareness
  12. Service

The first time working through the steps can be a challenging experience for anyone, so we welcome questions and are always available to help. It’s not uncommon for young men in recovery to feel intimidated by the idea of attending a meeting or opening up about their struggles. But we also know that taking that first step is essential in finding support and connection on the path to recovery.
