Depression makes normal life feel impossible. Many people wonder, “What does depression feel like?” but the emotions can be hard to put into words. Each person has a different experience, but depression normally involves an ongoing sense of sadness, apathy, or hopelessness. Often, those with addiction also struggle with depression or anxiety, which means dual diagnosis treatment is a must.

At Red Oak Recovery, we understand how challenging mental health issues like depression are. When these issues occur alongside substance use disorders, it can be difficult to cope. That’s why we offer an integrative approach to treatment that addresses the whole person, not just the addiction. Our unique programming includes a range of therapies, including evidence-based and experiential therapies. Our approaches help young men find their way toward long-term recovery. To learn more about our dual diagnosis treatment center, please contact Red Oak Recovery today at 866.457.7590.

What Does Depression Feel Like?

Depression can feel like anxiety, guilt, or unending sadness. It involves more than just the answer to, “What does depression feel like?” When someone has depression, it can cause changes in their appetite, energy levels, and sleep patterns. They may find it impossible to fall asleep at night, or they might feel like sleeping constantly.

For many people, depression feels like a sense of apathy. The individual no longer cares about activities that they once loved. They may become isolated because they just do not have the energy to attempt going out, having fun, or meeting people. Instead, they stay at home and remain lost in a world of sadness.

Depression feels like different things to different people. While some people can continue with normal life, severe depression can be debilitating. Some people even develop an addiction as they try to self-medicate for the symptoms of their depression.

What Does Depression Feel Like to Loved Ones?

Loved ones may see many different signs of depression. They may notice that the individual suddenly gains or loses a lot of weight. The individual may have a poor appetite or seem extra sleepy.

Emotionally, the individual may go through irritability, social isolation, agitation, and restlessness. They may cry all the time or seem unexcited about their favorite hobbies. The individual may suffer from fatigue, excessive hunger, or a total loss of appetite.

Asking “What does depression feel like?” is only one way for people to understand their loved one’s pain. Sometimes, talking to a close friend or family member helps to ease the loneliness and sadness of depression. In other cases, individuals need help through options like our depression treatment center in Asheville, NC.

Coping with Depression

Depression is a serious mental illness, but it is also treatable. There are many ways that people can cope with their depression and find joy in everyday life. For instance, these coping methods may include:

  • Finding a support group
  • Exercising regularly
  • Eating a balanced diet
  • Practicing meditation or relaxation techniques
  • Spending time in nature
  • Staying connected with loved ones

It can be challenging to cope with feelings of depression alone. Therefore, if the strategies above don’t help, you may want to find a depression treatment program. In treatment, you will work with a team of mental health professionals to develop a personalized plan for your recovery. This plan may include different types of therapy, medication, and other holistic approaches.

Get Treatment for Depression at Red Oak Recovery

Depression feels like different emotions for each person, but all of these feelings are a sign that the individual needs help. If the individual does not get treatment, their depression could become worse over time. In severe cases, the individual may become suicidal or completely lose interest in living their life. Treatments for depression are available, but the individual has to be willing to do them.

At our young adult rehab programs, individuals can find treatments for depression and addictions. The rehab program may offer options such as:

  • Dual diagnosis treatment for co-occurring illnesses
  • Psychotherapy, individual counseling, and group therapy
  • Adventure and experiential therapy
  • Depression treatment and grief counseling
  • Holistic healing programs for the entire person
  • Family therapy program and family counseling
  • Gardening and eco-therapy

The pain of depression and anxiety or addiction does not have to last forever. Through the right treatment program, individuals can take the first step toward a healthier, happier life. Learn more about Red Oak Recovery and how we can help you or your loved one by calling us today at 866.457.7590.
