If you or someone you know is in the process of recovering from drug abuse and addiction, then you know that this is a long process. When people talk about addiction recovery, this is a journey, not a destination. There will never come a time when someone is wholly cured of addiction. According to the United States government, thousands of people died of alcohol-related incidents in 2018. Therefore, if someone you know is going through the stages of recovery, then you need to know what to expect. When you take the time to try to understand your loved one’s journey during the recovery process, you will place him or her in the best position possible to be successful. If you have any questions, please reach out to Red Oak Recovery today at 866.457.7590.

Recognizing There Is a Problem

The first step in the addiction journey is to recognize that there is a problem. Someone can’t seek help for drug use, substance use, or addiction if they do not realize that there is an issue.

Some of the signs that someone you know may be struggling with addiction include:

  • There are a lot of people who are complaining about that individual’s substance use.
  • The individual gets annoyed when someone complains about his or her substance use.
  • He or she is making an effort to hide his or her substance use, which is a sign of guilt.
  • He or she is using alcohol or drugs in the morning, usually referred to as an eye-opener.

The first step on the recovery journey is to admit that there is a problem. Once they admit that there is an issue that should be addressed, the treatment process can begin.

The Treatment Initiation Process

The next step that has to take place is the treatment initiation process. For example, this may involve seeking inpatient medical care for the first time. In most cases, inpatient medical care is where someone goes when they need to detox from alcohol or drug use. That way, they can go through the withdrawal process under the supervision of trained medical professionals.

Another significant benefit of inpatient drug abuse and addiction treatment is removing all distractions from the outside world. Because people in inpatient facilities are not going to be distracted by their external obligations, they can focus all of their attention on the recovery process. This will help them learn the skills they need to succeed when they transition to the outpatient world.

Treatment Maintenance in the Outside World

Once individuals leave the inpatient setting, they need to maintain their sobriety in the outside world. Often, this will involve continuing treatment. For example, those going through addiction recovery on the outpatient side will meet with a trained medical professional about once per week or once a month. The longer sobriety lasts, the more spaced out these visits are going to become.

One of the other critical parts of this stage of recovery is to go to group meetings on a regular basis. Group meetings are an essential part of sobriety because this allows individuals to help other people remain sober. Furthermore, they will be able to learn from the experiences of others who are at the meeting.
